a man in his late 20′s hits the 18th floor button in the elevator, but just as the doors start to close a drunk man and a woman in their mid 30′s, that he thinks are a couple rush into the elevator. they hit the first floor button and he sighs. as the doors close he says to them, “well thats just lazy, you could have walked”. they look at him and the woman says, ” no i couldnt have, i have leukaemia”, there is an awkward silence, and then the first man says apologetically “oh, ok, im sorry, i didnt know” and as the drunk couple leave the elevator she looks at him and says, “yeah, ok, you’re sorry” there is a hint of smugness in the tone of her voice.

What I take from this is that someone could make that mistake. Leukemia isn’t a common thing to observe and detect. So once the man made apologizes, shouldn’t that be good enough? The woman obviously doesn’t believe sympathy is a possible thing to have for the man with leukemia, but why must she stoop to lower levels? If the man were not to say sorry it’s mostly appropriate for her to be annoyed with him, but that isn’t the case. It’s interesting sometimes how even when one person apologizes and must feel somewhat bad, its not good enough.
